Most of the doors we are called out to have already been quoted for replacement by somebody else. Usually they do not need it.
A sliding patio door has a frame, two panels of glass and a small number of moving parts. The frame outlives the house. The glass outlives the frame. The rollers, the track surface, the weatherstrip and the latch are what wear out, and every one of them is a replaceable component. The same is true of a French door pair that has dropped on its hinges, a storefront entrance that has worn its bottom pivot, and a window whose balances have given up.
That is the whole approach: find what actually failed, fix that, and fix whatever caused it so it does not happen again in eighteen months. A door that keeps needing the same repair is a door where somebody treated the symptom.
Why we talk about weather so much
Because Alabama is not one climate and doors are the part of a building most exposed to the difference. Salt air on the Gulf Coast destroys roller bearings and lock cylinders on doors that never see spray. Expansive prairie clay through the Black Belt lifts and drops foundations enough that frames rack and doors stop latching. Freezes on Sand Mountain make weatherstrip brittle and ice up tracks. Blowing sand in the Wiregrass grinds wheels flat. Red clay dust in the Birmingham metro packs into tracks and turns into grinding paste.
Fitting the right parts for the conditions is the difference between a repair that lasts and a repair you pay for twice.
