Our Ashland customers are spread from Downtown Ashland to the courthouse square and out around the Clay County Courthouse, and we serve the surrounding Clay County communities on the same schedule.
A lot of what we see in Clay County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.
One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.

- Grinding or gritty feel when you turn itDebris or corrosion inside the mechanism.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895How conditions in Ashland affect door handle repair
The foothills get real cold snaps and real heat, and the ground moves with them. Rocky, uneven fill under older slabs means door frames rarely stay perfectly square for a decade.
Water running down a door face gets behind the exterior rose and sits against the latch mechanism, which rusts the spring cassette and is why exterior handles fail far more often than interior ones.
Wind catching a door pulls it out of somebody's hand and slams it, and repeated slamming is what loosens handle mounting screws and eventually oversizes the bore in the door.
We factor that in on every door handle repair job around the Clay County Courthouse and the rest of Ashland.
Local factors we account for in Ashland: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Our door handle repair process
- Work out whether it is the handle or the latchThey feel similar from the outside. Turning the handle with the door open tells us immediately which part has failed.
- Check the door before the hardwareA lever that needs force is often fighting a misaligned strike rather than failing on its own.
- Repair where repair is honestSprings, spindles and roses are replaceable. We say so rather than selling a set when a spindle would do.
- Fit correctly to the doorRight backset, right bore, hardware sitting square and pulled up tight to both faces.
- Adjust the latch engagementThe door should close and latch with a light push, not a shove.
- Check the rest of the setHandles usually fail in groups, so we test the others while we are there rather than leaving you to call again. We check for freeze damage as well as wear on foothill openings, since both are common and they need different fixes.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door handle repair in Ashland
What a door handle repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- keyed versus non-keyed function
- whether the bore or backset needs correction
- commercial grade requirements on high-use doors
- the grade and finish of the hardware chosen
- how many doors are being done at once
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Ashland.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door handle repair in Ashland: questions we get asked
The handle turns but the door will not open. What is wrong?
The connection between the handle and the latch has broken, usually the spindle or the internal drive. If somebody is stuck behind that door, say so when you call and we will treat it accordingly.
My lever handle droops. Can that be repaired?
Yes, usually. The return spring inside the handle body has failed. On decent hardware we can replace the spring cassette; on thin builder-grade sets it is often cheaper to fit a better handle than to rebuild a weak one.
Do you do commercial handle and lever work?
Yes, including Grade 1 lever sets, classroom and storeroom functions and hardware on doors with closers, where the handle has to work against constant spring pressure.
Do I need to replace the lock to replace the handle?
Not necessarily. On a keyed entry set they are integrated, but on many doors the handle and the deadbolt are separate and you can change one without touching the other.
How long does a handle replacement take?
Most take under an hour per door in Ashland. If the bore is worn or the backset does not match, it takes longer because the door itself needs work before the new hardware will sit right.
Can you fix an old mortise handle set on a historic door?
Often yes. Old mortise sets were built to be serviced, and the original hardware is usually better made than any replacement. We would rather rebuild it than gut a door for a modern set.
