Screen Door Repair in Clio, AL

The most common screen door call we get is a sliding screen that has fallen out of its track for the third time. That is a roller and track problem, not a screen problem, and no amount of forcing it back up will fix it.

Screen Door Repair — Clio, Alabama

Most of our Clio calls come from Main Street and the AL-10 corridor, though we work the whole Barbour County side of it and get out to Eufaula regularly.

Door problems in Clio tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

The screen door repair problems we see most in Clio

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Clio. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The screen door falls out of the trackWorn screen rollers or a bent top rail that no longer holds the panel in the head channel.
  • Pets have pushed through the bottomA rescreen with pet-resistant mesh and often a pet grille.
  • Mesh sagging and billowingLoose or dried-out spline that is no longer holding the mesh tight.
  • The storm door blew open and bent the armNo wind chain fitted, or a failed hold-open washer on the closer.
  • The mesh is torn or has holesStraightforward rescreen, and worth doing before the tear spreads.
  • It takes real effort to slideSeized rollers or a track full of packed debris.

What we see on screen door repair around Barbour County

The Wiregrass gets punishing summer heat and enough tropical rain that hurricane remnants are a normal part of the year, not an exception. Sally and Michael both did door and window damage this far inland.

Wind gets behind a screen panel and pushes it out of the track, and on hinged screen and storm doors a gust catching the door is what tears closers out of the frame.

Rain drives grit and organic debris into the screen track, and that debris packs down under the rollers and holds moisture against the frame.

It is why the same repair done properly in Clio lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.

Local factors we account for in Clio: storm wind and heavy rainfall — typical of the Wiregrass.

Our screen door repair process

  1. Check it against the openingWe run the frame through its travel and watch where it tightens, which shows whether the fault is the frame or what it runs in.
  2. Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
  3. Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one. Sandy-soil jobs get their running surfaces cleaned out thoroughly, because new rollers fitted into a gritty track will not last a year.
  4. Rescreen with correct tensionToo tight and the frame bows, too loose and it billows. Even tension is what keeps a screen flat and quiet.
  5. Fit and adjust the rollersSet so the panel rides smoothly and stays captured in the head channel.
  6. Check it stays in the trackA screen that can be lifted out is one gust from being on the patio, so the height and the guides get set properly.

What affects the cost of screen door repair in Clio

What a screen door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:

  • the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar
  • custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
  • rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
  • the size of the panel
  • storm door hardware such as closers and latches

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Clio.

Screen door repair in Clio: questions we get asked

My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?

UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Clio take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.

Do you make custom-size screens?

Yes. Older openings in Clio are rarely a stock size, and building a panel to the actual measured opening is the only way to get one that fits and stays in.

Will a solar screen make my room cooler?

It helps noticeably on a sunny exposure. Solar mesh blocks a good portion of the heat before it reaches the glass, which matters on west-facing doors during Clio summers.

Is it worth rescreening or should I just buy a new screen door?

Rescreening is far cheaper and the frame is usually fine. New panels only make sense when the frame is bent beyond straightening or the corners are gone.

My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?

Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.

Can a bent screen frame be straightened?

Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.
