Douglas is part of our regular Marshall County territory, and between the AL-168 corridor, Douglas Road and the Sand Mountain farmland area we are here most weeks.
Door problems in Douglas tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Douglas. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Corners have come apartFailed corner keys, which are replaceable.
- The screen track itself is damagedThe channel the screen rides in has been bent or worn.
- The frame is bent or racked out of squareUsually from being forced back into a track it was not sitting right in.
- The mesh is torn or has holesStraightforward rescreen, and worth doing before the tear spreads.
- The frame flexes visibly when you pull the handleFailed corner keys, which is why the whole frame is racking rather than sliding.
- Sun damage has made the mesh brittleUV degradation, common on south and west facing doors.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What Douglas weather does to screen door repair
Elevation means wind. Doors on exposed western walls take a beating that the same door in a sheltered valley subdivision would never see.
Wind gets behind a screen panel and pushes it out of the track, and on hinged screen and storm doors a gust catching the door is what tears closers out of the frame.
Cold makes screen spline brittle and it shrinks in the channel, which is why mesh often comes loose along one edge after a hard winter even though nothing touched it.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Douglas summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Douglas: storm wind and winter freezes — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Work out whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that jams is often a track problem. Replacing rollers in a damaged track fixes nothing.
- Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
- Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one.
- Rescreen with correct tensionToo tight and the frame bows, too loose and it billows. Even tension is what keeps a screen flat and quiet. We check the drainage for ice blockage on mountain openings, which is a fault that only shows up on the coldest days.
- Fit and adjust the rollersBoth rollers set so the frame runs level and the latch meets its keeper without lifting.
- Test the full travelThe door should move with one finger, latch cleanly and stay in the track.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of screen door repair in Douglas
What a screen door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- storm door hardware such as closers and latches
- roller and track work in addition to the screen itself
- the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar
- custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
- rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Douglas.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Screen door repair in Douglas: questions we get asked
My sliding screen keeps falling out. Why does it keep happening?
The rollers have worn down so the panel is riding too low and the top rail no longer sits in the head channel. Lifting it back in without replacing the rollers means it will come out again, usually within days.
The screen slides hard even though it is not falling out. What is wrong?
Either the rollers have seized or the track is packed with debris. In Douglas the track collects a surprising amount of grit, and it acts like grinding paste on the rollers.
Can a bent screen frame be straightened?
Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.
Can you make a screen that keeps out the tiny biting insects?
Yes, fine no-see-um mesh. It has a much tighter weave, and in the parts of Marshall County near water it is the only thing that actually works against the smallest biters.
Do you make custom-size screens?
Yes. Older openings in Douglas are rarely a stock size, and building a panel to the actual measured opening is the only way to get one that fits and stays in.
My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?
Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.
