Our Fayette customers are spread from Downtown Fayette to Temple Avenue and out around the Fayette County Courthouse, and we serve the surrounding Fayette County communities on the same schedule.
Between the established parts of Fayette and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

- Visible gap between the hinge leaf and the jambThe hinge is pulling away under load.
- Cracks in the jamb around the hinge mortiseThe jamb material has split under the load.
- The door binds only in the last inch of closingA hinge mortised too deep, pushing the door toward the strike as it comes home.

West Alabama collects a lot of rain, and it comes in hard bursts. Doors here fail at the bottom first, where water sits against the sweep and the end grain.
Water running down a door edge collects at the hinge leaves and sits in the mortise, which corrodes the hinge and softens the jamb wood the screws are anchored in.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
It is why the same repair done properly in Fayette lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Fayette: heavy rainfall and storm wind — typical of west Alabama.

- Find the hinge that actually failedThe door drags at the latch, but the fault is almost always at the top hinge. We check each one under load.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Repair the mortise before fitting hardwareA new hinge in a damaged mortise will loosen again quickly.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealAn even gap top to bottom, latch side and hinge side, before we go anywhere near the lock. We assess whether the opening has shifted before adjusting hardware, since correcting the symptom here tends not to hold.
- Silence it properlyOnce the geometry is right, the pins and knuckles are lubricated so the squeak does not simply come back.

There is no single price for door hinge repair in Fayette, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:
- whether the mortises or screw holes need rebuilding first
- standard hinges versus ball bearing or continuous hinges
- whether the door also needs re-hanging or the strike relocated
- how many hinges need replacement versus repair
- finish and security hardware selections
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Fayette.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Fayette: questions we get asked
My door is sagging. Do I need a new door?
Almost never. A sagging door is a hinge problem, usually the top hinge losing its grip on the jamb. Once the fasteners are anchored into the framing properly the door comes back up and latches again.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?
Pins, tips and lubrication problems are repairable. Once the knuckles have worn oval and the hinge has play in it, it is done and needs replacing, and putting a new pin in a worn hinge does not help.
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Fayette it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
