Grand Bay sits in Mobile County, and our work here runs from the US-90 corridor out past the Grand Bay Savanna, with Prichard and Tillmans Corner close enough that we are usually in the area anyway.
Between the established parts of Grand Bay and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

These are the door hinge repair faults we are called out to most often in Grand Bay. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The door binds only in the last inch of closingA hinge mortised too deep, pushing the door toward the strike as it comes home.
- Commercial door binding against the frameWorn hinges or failed bearings on a heavy door with a closer.
- Rust streaks below the hingesCorroding hinges, common on exterior doors that get weather.
- Visible gap between the hinge leaf and the jambThe hinge is pulling away under load.
- Hinge screws spin and will not tightenStripped screw holes in the jamb, or screws that only ever reached the jamb and not the framing.
- Screw heads sitting proud of the leafThe screws are bottoming out in stripped holes and holding nothing.

Between roughly 65 inches of rain a year, near-constant humidity and a June-to-November hurricane season, coastal doors work harder than doors anywhere else in Alabama.
A gust catching an open door and slamming it against its stop puts an enormous shock load through the top hinge, and that single event is often what starts a sag that develops over the following months.
Damp jamb material loses its grip on screw threads, and a hinge screw that was tight in a dry jamb starts to spin once the wood around it has been at high moisture content for a couple of seasons.
We see the pattern often enough across Mobile County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.
Local factors we account for in Grand Bay: storm wind and sustained humidity — typical of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

- Measure the reveal all roundThe gap pattern around a sagging door points straight at which hinge has given up.
- Check what the screws are holding ontoShort screws into casing rather than framing are the most common cause of sag we see, and no hinge fixes that.
- Repair the mortise before fitting hardwareA new hinge in a damaged mortise will loosen again quickly.
- Size the hinge to the doorA solid or fire-rated door needs hinges rated for its weight. Three light hinges on a heavy slab will always sag again.
- Re-hang and check the revealEven gap top to bottom on the latch side, and a door that stays where you leave it.
- Confirm the latch and lock still line upMoving a door on its hinges changes where the latch lands, so the strike gets checked too. We check the drainage path on every coastal opening, because wind-driven rain gets in where ordinary rain never would.
Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.
Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of door hinge repair in Grand Bay
There is no single price for door hinge repair in Grand Bay, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:
- whether the door also needs re-hanging or the strike relocated
- standard hinges versus ball bearing or continuous hinges
- finish and security hardware selections
- the weight and size of the door
- whether the mortises or screw holes need rebuilding first
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Grand Bay.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door hinge repair in Grand Bay: questions we get asked
Are the hinges on my sliding door serviceable?
Sliding doors do not use hinges, but French and swinging patio doors do, and they are heavy. Those hinges take a lot of load and are worth checking if the door has started dragging.
My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Grand Bay it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
How do I know which hinge is the problem?
Look at the gap between the door and the frame down the latch side. If it is tight at the top and wide at the bottom, the top hinge has pulled. That is the one carrying the most load and it fails first.
Do heavy doors need special hinges?
Yes. Solid core, exterior and commercial doors, and any door with a closer on it, should be on ball bearing hinges. Plain butt hinges on a heavy door wear out fast and take the jamb with them.
How long does hinge work take?
Straightforward hinge replacement is usually under an hour. If the mortises are damaged or the door needs re-hanging and the strike relocated, allow longer.
Why do my hinge screws keep coming loose?
Because they are only holding into jamb material, which is often less than an inch of soft wood. Long screws driven into the structural framing behind the jamb solve it permanently.
