Will fixing the hinges fix my latching problem?
Frequently. A door that has dropped on its hinges puts the latch below the strike. Bringing the door back to position often means the lock works again with no other work.
What makes hinges squeal?
Dry or worn pins, and sometimes grit in the knuckles. In Henagar the doors that squeal first are usually exterior doors, because moisture strips the lubricant and starts surface corrosion inside the knuckle.
Can hinges be repaired or do they have to be replaced?

My door swings open by itself. Can that be fixed?
Yes. That means the hinge line is out of plumb, so the door is rolling downhill. Re-hanging it plumb fixes it, and in Henagar it often turns up in houses where the frame has moved.
