Exterior Door Repair — Kinsey, Alabama

Most of our Kinsey calls come from the US-431 corridor and the Chattahoochee River, though we work the whole Houston County side of it and get out to Rehobeth regularly.

Between the established parts of Kinsey and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

Tell us what the door is doing and we will tell you what it needs. No guesswork over the phone, no pressure.

When to call about exterior door repair

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Kinsey. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Rust streaks or bubbling paint on a steel doorMoisture getting into the door skin, usually at the bottom edge.
  • Drafts you can feel from across the roomCompressed seals and a threshold no longer meeting the door bottom.
  • Peeling finish on a wood front doorUV and weather exposure, often on a door with no overhang protection.
  • The deadbolt does not throw fullyStrike misalignment, and a security problem until it is fixed.
  • Water on the floor inside after rainFailed sweep, threshold or sill pan, or missing drip cap above the door.
  • The weatherstrip has a permanent flattened sectionThe door is contacting hard at one point and not sealing anywhere else along that edge.

What Kinsey weather does to exterior door repair

Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.

Sand builds up against thresholds and holds moisture there, and it also abrades the finish at the bottom of a door, which is where finish failure turns into water penetration.

Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.

Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Kinsey summer and one that does not.

Local factors we account for in Kinsey: blowing sand and storm wind — typical of the Wiregrass.

Our exterior door repair process

  1. Check it in the closed position firstStanding inside with the lights off and looking for daylight tells us more in ten seconds than any amount of measuring.
  2. Follow the waterStaining, rot and rust all point uphill to an entry point. We find that before repairing anything downstream of it.
  3. Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot fix an inconsistent gap. The door has to be sitting right before sealing it means anything.
  4. Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
  5. Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw completely with one finger and the door untouched.
  6. Check the finish and the edgesTop and bottom edges get sealed, because unsealed end grain is the fastest way back to a warped door. In the Wiregrass we check tracks and channels for fine sand, which grinds moving parts flat faster than anything else in the state.

What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Kinsey

There is no single price for exterior door repair in Kinsey, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:

  • the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
  • whether water management details also need correcting
  • weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
  • sidelight and transom glass replacement
  • whether the frame has rot that needs splicing

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Kinsey.

Exterior door repair in Kinsey: questions we get asked

My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?

Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.

Can you make my front door easier to open for an older parent?

Yes. Lever hardware instead of a knob, correct hinge adjustment so the door is not fighting the frame, and a threshold that is not a trip hazard all make a real difference.

I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?

Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.

Can you fix a front door that has warped?

Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.

Is my front door secure enough?

The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.

My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?

Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
