Our Muscle Shoals customers are spread from Avalon Avenue to Woodward Avenue and out around FAME Recording Studios, and we serve the surrounding Colbert County communities on the same schedule.
A lot of what we see in Colbert County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Muscle Shoals. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
- Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
- Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
- Warping visible along the door edgeMoisture imbalance between the interior and exterior faces of the slab.
- The weatherstrip has a permanent flattened sectionThe door is contacting hard at one point and not sealing anywhere else along that edge.
- Peeling finish on a wood front doorUV and weather exposure, often on a door with no overhang protection.

Wilson and Pickwick backwater keeps the air damp year round here, which is hard on untreated wood jambs and on any hardware with a steel core.
Water reaching a threshold with no sill pan under it goes into the framing and the subfloor, and by the time it shows as a soft jamb the damage underneath is usually well advanced.
Freezes make exterior weatherstrip brittle, and a compressed, brittle seal stops recovering its shape, so the door that sealed acceptably last winter has visible daylight around it this one.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Muscle Shoals: heavy rainfall and winter freezes — typical of the Shoals.

- Check it in the closed position firstAn exterior door only has to work in one position. We look at how it sits shut before we look at how it swings.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first.
- Fit hardware and seals rated for exposureThe finish and material matter on an exterior door in this climate, and cheap components fail fast.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong. In the Shoals we check for damp-driven movement in timber frames, which is behind a lot of what gets blamed on hardware.
- Water-test itA hose on the closed door tells you more than any inspection, and it is how we confirm the leak is actually gone.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Muscle Shoals
Every exterior door repair call in Colbert County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- whether water management details also need correcting
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Muscle Shoals.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Muscle Shoals: questions we get asked
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Muscle Shoals's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
The bottom of my wooden front door is rotting. Can it be saved?
Often yes, if it is caught early enough. The bottom rail can be repaired and the door refinished. What matters more is fixing the water that caused it, or the repair rots out the same way.
Can you make my front door easier to open for an older parent?
Yes. Lever hardware instead of a knob, correct hinge adjustment so the door is not fighting the frame, and a threshold that is not a trip hazard all make a real difference.
Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?
The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In Colbert County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
