Most of our Oak Grove calls come from the AL-21 corridor and Logan Martin Lake, though we work the whole Talladega County side of it and get out to Talladega regularly.
A lot of what we see in Talladega County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the door closer repair faults we are called out to most often in Oak Grove. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Grinding from a floor closerWorn spindle or bearings in the floor unit.
- The closer arm is bentThe door has been forced open past its stop, usually by wind or by a cart.
- Screws pulling out of the door or frameCloser mounting has failed, often because the closer was undersized for the door.
- A fire door that stays openSerious safety issue: failed closer or a hold-open that should be releasing.
- Mounting screws have pulled the door skin outwardA closer fitted to a hollow door without a reinforcing plate.
- The door slams open against the wallBackcheck has failed or is not adjusted, and the arm and frame are taking the impact.

Storms coming off the ridges dump a lot of water in a short time, and any door with a compromised threshold pan will show it on the floor inside.
Closer fluid thickens as temperature drops, which is the single most common reason a door that latched perfectly in warm weather stops closing fully in winter, and it is a seasonal adjustment rather than a fault.
When a frame moves with the ground under it, the door binds somewhere in its swing, and people compensate by cranking the closer tighter, which is why so many doors are simultaneously hard to open and still not latching.
None of it is a reason to replace a door. It is a reason to use the right parts and set the door up correctly in the first place.
Local factors we account for in Oak Grove: winter freezes and soil movement — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Our door closer repair process
- Watch the door close, twiceThe speed of the last few inches and the first few tells us most of what we need to know before we touch a valve.
- Rule out the door before blaming the closerA door binding on the frame makes a perfectly good closer look weak, and turning the closer up is the wrong answer.
- Adjust before replacingMany closers we are called to are serviceable and simply out of adjustment. That is a much smaller job and we say so.
- Size the replacement properlyCloser size depends on door width and weight and on whether it faces exterior wind. Undersized closers fail early.
- Set for people, not just latchingOpening force is checked so the door is usable by everybody, then latch speed is set so it still closes properly.
- Fit a stop if it needs oneA closer with no backcheck and no stop will eventually put the handle through the wall and tear its own fixings out. We check for freeze damage as well as wear on foothill openings, since both are common and they need different fixes.

What a door closer repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- adding overhead stops or hold-open functions
- adjustment versus rebuild versus full replacement
- whether the mounting has to be repaired or reinforced
- fire rating and accessibility compliance requirements
- surface, concealed or floor mounted closer type

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Door closer repair in Oak Grove: questions we get asked
What size closer do I need?
It depends on the door width, weight and exposure. Exterior doors in Talladega County also need to handle wind, and an undersized closer on a windy exposure gets destroyed.
Our fire door is propped open. Is that a problem?
Yes, and it is one of the most common code violations we see. A fire door that cannot close and latch is not doing anything. If it gets propped because it is hard to use, that is the problem to solve.
My door slams every time. Can that be adjusted?
Almost always. There is a latch speed valve on the closer that controls the last few inches, and it has probably drifted or been set wrong. Adjusting it takes minutes and saves your frame, hinges and hardware from a lot of abuse.
The closer arm on our door is bent. What causes that?
The door was opened past its limit, usually by wind catching it or by someone pushing it hard against a wall. Replacing the arm without adding an overhead stop just means it happens again.
My door does not close all the way. What is going on?
Either the closing force is too low, or the door is dragging on the frame in the last few inches. In Oak Grove we see the second one often, because a frame that has moved makes a good closer look weak.
Why is our door so heavy to open now?
Somebody has probably turned the closer up to force a door that was not latching. That is treating a symptom, and it makes the door difficult for customers and staff. Fix the latching problem and the closer can come back to a reasonable setting.
