Sliding Door Repair in Evergreen, AL

The three things that go wrong on a sliding glass door are rollers, track and alignment, and they are connected. A worn roller lets the panel drop, the dropped panel grinds the track, and the chewed-up track destroys the next set...

Sliding Door Repair — Evergreen, Alabama

Evergreen is part of our regular Conecuh County territory, and between Downtown Evergreen, the courthouse square and the the Conecuh County Courthouse area we are here most weeks.

Evergreen has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

What Evergreen customers call us about

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Evergreen. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • Track full of packed grit that will not vacuum outDebris compacted under the rollers, which accelerates wear on both parts.
  • You can lift the panel visibly in its openingExcess head clearance from a sagging header, which is what lets it jump the track.
  • The door will not latch anymoreThe panel has settled out of square, so the hook or mortise latch no longer lines up with the keeper.
  • The door stops short of the jamb by half an inchDebris packed at the end of the track, or an adjuster screw wound fully out.
  • Water on the floor after heavy rainBlocked weep holes in the sill, so the track fills and backs up over the interior lip.
  • The track has a raised lip you can catch a fingernail onAluminium track peened over by a panel that has been running on bare wheel housings.

How conditions in Evergreen affect sliding door repair

Sandy soil here drains fast but also shifts, and blowing sand is a constant presence in sliding door tracks and screen channels.

Sliding door sills are designed to collect water and drain it back outside through weep holes, and after a heavy rain those weeps are exactly where debris ends up, so the track fills, the water backs over the interior lip, and the roller assemblies sit in standing water.

Sun loading on a west-facing patio slider expands the aluminum frame through the afternoon and degrades the vinyl weatherstrip and the glazing gaskets, so the door that slides fine at nine in the morning is tight by four.

We factor that in on every sliding door repair job around the Conecuh County Courthouse and the rest of Evergreen.

Local factors we account for in Evergreen: heavy rainfall and sun and heat load — typical of the Wiregrass.

How a Evergreen sliding door repair visit works

  1. Start with the openingBefore the panel comes out we check the header for deflection and the sill for level, because a door cannot run true in an opening that is not.
  2. Get the glass out of the way safelyA patio panel is heavy and awkward. We take it out properly so the track and the roller housings can actually be seen.
  3. Match rollers to the door, not the cataloguePanel weight, housing type and track profile all decide the roller. Fitting whatever is on the van is why doors come back.
  4. Bring the running surface backA pitted or peened track will destroy new rollers in a season, so it gets dressed, capped or replaced before anything goes back in.
  5. Set it so the lock works without liftingThe height is right when the latch engages with the door simply pushed closed. Anything you have to lift is still misadjusted.
  6. Hand it back working the way you use itWe open and close it the way you would, one-handed, and check the lock, the screen and the drainage before we leave. In the Wiregrass we check tracks and channels for fine sand, which grinds moving parts flat faster than anything else in the state.

What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Evergreen

There is no single price for sliding door repair in Evergreen, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:

  • the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it
  • whether the fix is rollers only or rollers plus track repair
  • whether the frame has moved and needs shimming or refastening
  • how many panels the system has, since three and four panel doors take longer to set
  • how much damage the worn track has taken before the call

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Evergreen.

Sliding door repair in Evergreen: questions we get asked

My door came off the track. Did I break something?

Usually not. A panel comes out of the track when it has dropped low enough that the head channel no longer holds it, which means the rollers were already worn or the adjustment screws backed out. Putting it back without correcting the height means it will happen again.

What does it mean when there is water pooling in the track?

The weep holes that drain the sill are blocked. It is one of the most common causes of water on the floor inside, and it is also one of the easiest things to fix, but if it sits long enough it rusts the roller assemblies out.

Do you repair the older aluminum sliding doors?

Yes, and there are a lot of them in Evergreen. Aluminum frames from the sixties through the eighties are actually good candidates for repair because the frame material has not degraded; it is the rollers, the track surface and the weatherstrip that have worn out.

Will new rollers fix a door that scrapes loudly?

Only if the track is still in good condition. Once a roller has broken through and the housing has been riding on bare aluminum, the track has a groove worn in it, and new rollers dropped onto that groove will fail quickly. That is when we cap the track.

Do you replace the glass in sliding doors too?

Yes. Fogged units where the insulated seal has failed, cracked panes and full tempered glass replacement are all part of what we do, and we can usually keep the existing frame.

Do you charge to come look at it?

We talk through the symptoms on the phone first, because a lot of sliding door problems can be narrowed down from a good description and a photo of the bottom rail. Call and we will tell you what we think is going on and what it takes to fix.
