Gardendale is part of our regular Jefferson County territory, and between the Fieldstown Road corridor, Main Street and the the Gardendale Civic Center area we are here most weeks.
A lot of what we see in Jefferson County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Gardendale. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Rust streaks or bubbling paint on a steel doorMoisture getting into the door skin, usually at the bottom edge.
- Soft wood at the bottom of the door or jambRot from standing water; the sooner it is caught the smaller the repair.
- Warping visible along the door edgeMoisture imbalance between the interior and exterior faces of the slab.
- The top edge of the door is unpaintedA common shortcut at installation, and it is the fastest route to a warped slab.
- Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
- The sweep leaves a visible arc of wear on the thresholdThe door has dropped, so the sweep is loaded rather than lightly contacting.

The metro runs humid from April to October, then flips to freezing nights in January, and hardware that was fine in August starts binding in winter.
Grit at the threshold grinds the door sweep as the door closes over it, and a worn sweep is the most common reason an otherwise sound exterior door starts letting in air, water and insects.
Soil movement under an entry racks the frame, and the tell is a door that seals fine along one edge and shows a widening gap at the opposite corner, which is not something weatherstrip will fix.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Gardendale summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Gardendale: grit and dust and soil movement — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Assess it closed, from insideWith the lights off inside, daylight shows exactly where the seal has failed. That is the fastest diagnosis there is.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot fix an inconsistent gap. The door has to be sitting right before sealing it means anything.
- Fit hardware and seals rated for exposureThe finish and material matter on an exterior door in this climate, and cheap components fail fast.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong. Metro-area openings often sit on clay that moves seasonally, so we check the frame for square before touching the hardware.
- Check the finish and the edgesTop and bottom edges get sealed, because unsealed end grain is the fastest way back to a warped door.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Gardendale
What a exterior door repair job costs comes down to a handful of things, and we would rather be straight about them up front:
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
- weatherstrip and threshold work versus structural repair
- whether water management details also need correcting
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Gardendale.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Gardendale: questions we get asked
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Gardendale's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?
The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In Jefferson County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.
How much does a leaky front door actually cost me?
More than people expect. A gap you can see daylight through around a Gardendale entry door moves conditioned air continuously, and in the summer it is running against your air conditioning all day.
My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?
Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
