Gardendale is part of our regular Jefferson County territory, and between the Fieldstown Road corridor, Main Street and the the Gardendale Civic Center area we are here most weeks.
Gardendale has enough older housing stock that repair almost always beats replacement here, and enough new construction that we spend a lot of time on hardware that failed early.

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Gardendale. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The latch does not line upThe door has sagged or the frame has moved.
- It takes real effort to slideSeized rollers or a track full of packed debris.
- A retractable screen will not fully retractA fouled or fatigued spring cassette, or debris in the guide channel.
- The screen door falls out of the trackWorn screen rollers or a bent top rail that no longer holds the panel in the head channel.
- The screen tilts and jams halfway acrossOne roller seized while the other still turns, so the frame is walking out of square.
- Pets have pushed through the bottomA rescreen with pet-resistant mesh and often a pet grille.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why screen door repair fails in the Birmingham metro
The metro runs humid from April to October, then flips to freezing nights in January, and hardware that was fine in August starts binding in winter.
Humidity corrodes the steel components in screen rollers and rusts the tiny springs in adjusters, so screens seize up and drop out of their track.
Wind gets behind a screen panel and pushes it out of the track, and on hinged screen and storm doors a gust catching the door is what tears closers out of the frame.
We see the pattern often enough across Jefferson County that we usually know what we are looking at before we arrive.
Local factors we account for in Gardendale: sustained humidity and storm wind — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Work out whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that jams is often a track problem. Replacing rollers in a damaged track fixes nothing.
- Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered.
- Choose the right meshStandard fiberglass, pet-resistant, solar or fine mesh, depending on pets, sun exposure and what insects you are dealing with. We flush the running surfaces properly on metro jobs rather than just wiping them, since fine clay packs into places a cloth will not reach.
- Rescreen with correct tensionToo tight and the frame bows, too loose and it billows. Even tension is what keeps a screen flat and quiet.
- Fit and adjust the rollersBoth rollers set so the frame runs level and the latch meets its keeper without lifting.
- Test the full travelEnd to end, several times, with the latch engaging cleanly at the close.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of screen door repair in Gardendale
Every screen door repair call in Jefferson County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- storm door hardware such as closers and latches
- rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
- the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar
- the size of the panel
- custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Screen door repair in Gardendale: questions we get asked
Do you make custom-size screens?
Yes. Older openings in Gardendale are rarely a stock size, and building a panel to the actual measured opening is the only way to get one that fits and stays in.
My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?
Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.
Is it worth rescreening or should I just buy a new screen door?
Rescreening is far cheaper and the frame is usually fine. New panels only make sense when the frame is bent beyond straightening or the corners are gone.
My screen mesh has gone brittle and crumbles. What happened?
UV exposure. Screens on the south and west sides of a house in Gardendale take a lot of sun, and standard fiberglass mesh eventually degrades. Solar mesh lasts longer and cuts heat at the same time.
How long does a rescreen take?
Usually under an hour per panel in Gardendale. If the frame needs straightening or corner keys replaced, allow a bit longer.
My sliding screen keeps falling out. Why does it keep happening?
The rollers have worn down so the panel is riding too low and the top rail no longer sits in the head channel. Lifting it back in without replacing the rollers means it will come out again, usually within days.
