We know Ragland well: the older housing around Main Street, the newer construction toward the AL-144 corridor, and everything out past Neely Henry Lake.
Between the established parts of Ragland and the newer subdivisions, we see two different kinds of failure: worn-out frames on one side of town and worn-out hardware on the other.

- The deadbolt does not throw fullyStrike misalignment, and a security problem until it is fixed.
- Fasteners are showing rust streaks down the door faceNon-stainless fixings on an exposed opening, which will keep staining and eventually fail.
- Insects getting in around the doorGaps at the sweep and threshold, and often moisture-damaged wood attracting them.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.
- The door has to be shouldered to latchThe door has dropped, or the frame has moved and the strike no longer lines up.

Storms coming off the ridges dump a lot of water in a short time, and any door with a compromised threshold pan will show it on the floor inside.
Soil movement under an entry racks the frame, and the tell is a door that seals fine along one edge and shows a widening gap at the opposite corner, which is not something weatherstrip will fix.
Wind-driven rain hits an entry door horizontally, which defeats seals that would handle vertical rain without difficulty, and the water gets in at the top corners and behind the brickmould.
It is why the same repair done properly in Ragland lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Ragland: soil movement and storm wind — typical of the Appalachian foothills.

- Check it in the closed position firstAn exterior door only has to work in one position. We look at how it sits shut before we look at how it swings.
- Follow the waterStaining, rot and rust all point uphill to an entry point. We find that before repairing anything downstream of it.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Check it under a hoseWhere water has been getting in, we test the repair rather than assuming it worked. We check for freeze damage as well as wear on foothill openings, since both are common and they need different fixes.

There is no single price for exterior door repair in Ragland, because two doors with identical symptoms can need very different work. Here is what makes the difference:
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing

How much does a leaky front door actually cost me?
More than people expect. A gap you can see daylight through around a Ragland entry door moves conditioned air continuously, and in the summer it is running against your air conditioning all day.
I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?
Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.
How long does exterior door repair take?
Weatherstrip, threshold and alignment work is usually a few hours. Rot repair and frame work takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at before we start.
My steel door is rusting at the bottom. Do I need a new door?
Not necessarily. Steel door bottoms can be rebuilt, and the real issue is why water is sitting there. If the frame and skin above are sound, the repair is worth doing.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Ragland's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
Can you fix a front door that has warped?
Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.
Most doors we see are repairable.Call and find out before you price a replacement.
