Remlap sits in Blount County, and our work here runs from the AL-75 corridor out past Straight Mountain, with Oneonta and Cleveland close enough that we are usually in the area anyway.
A lot of what we see in Blount County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Remlap. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Rust streaks or bubbling paint on a steel doorMoisture getting into the door skin, usually at the bottom edge.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.
- The weatherstrip has a permanent flattened sectionThe door is contacting hard at one point and not sealing anywhere else along that edge.
- Sidelight or transom glass has foggedFailed insulated units in the fixed panels beside the door.
- The door bottom drags on the thresholdHinge sag or a threshold adjusted too high.
- Peeling finish on a wood front doorUV and weather exposure, often on a door with no overhang protection.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why exterior door repair fails in the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau
Up on the plateau the thermometer reads several degrees colder than the valley, and it stays below freezing longer. Ice storms are a real planning item here, not a novelty.
Ice at the threshold prevents a door from closing fully, and forcing it is what damages the sweep, the threshold and sometimes the door bottom itself.
Grit at the threshold grinds the door sweep as the door closes over it, and a worn sweep is the most common reason an otherwise sound exterior door starts letting in air, water and insects.
Knowing that is the difference between a repair that holds through a Remlap summer and one that does not.
Local factors we account for in Remlap: ice and sleet and grit and dust — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Assess it closed, from insideWith the lights off inside, daylight shows exactly where the seal has failed. That is the fastest diagnosis there is.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
- Get the door sitting right in its openingEven contact all round is what makes a seal work. Uneven contact is why the last set of weatherstrip failed.
- Fit for the exposureStainless fixings, marine-grade or coated hardware and the correct sweep, depending on how much weather the opening takes. We check the drainage for ice blockage on mountain openings, which is a fault that only shows up on the coldest days.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Water-test itA hose on the closed door tells you more than any inspection, and it is how we confirm the leak is actually gone.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Remlap
Pricing on exterior door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- whether water management details also need correcting
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Remlap.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Remlap: questions we get asked
Should I add a storm door to my entry?
It helps with weather and with keeping the door itself out of direct sun and rain, which extends the life of the finish. On a door that already gets full afternoon sun in Remlap, it is worth considering.
I can see daylight around my front door. Is that just weatherstrip?
Sometimes, but check whether the gap is even. A consistent gap all the way around is a weatherstrip job. A gap that is wide at one corner and tight at another means the door or frame has moved, and new weatherstrip will not close it.
Can you make my front door easier to open for an older parent?
Yes. Lever hardware instead of a knob, correct hinge adjustment so the door is not fighting the frame, and a threshold that is not a trip hazard all make a real difference.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Remlap's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
Can you fix a front door that has warped?
Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.
