Screen Door Repair in Smoke Rise, AL

Screen doors get treated as disposable, which is a shame because most of what fails on them costs very little to fix. Mesh, spline, rollers and corner keys are all replaceable, and the frame is usually fine.

Most of our Smoke Rise calls come from the US-31 corridor and Smoke Rise Drive, though we work the whole Blount County side of it and get out to Oneonta regularly.

A lot of what we see in Blount County comes down to age. Houses built decades ago have solid frames with tired hardware; houses built recently have sound hardware in frames that are still settling.

When to call about screen door repair

These are the screen door repair faults we are called out to most often in Smoke Rise. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.

  • The spline has lifted out of the channel at a cornerShrunken or hardened spline, usually after several summers of UV exposure.
  • The frame flexes visibly when you pull the handleFailed corner keys, which is why the whole frame is racking rather than sliding.
  • Sun damage has made the mesh brittleUV degradation, common on south and west facing doors.
  • Corners have come apartFailed corner keys, which are replaceable.
  • The mesh is torn or has holesStraightforward rescreen, and worth doing before the tear spreads.
  • The storm door blew open and bent the armNo wind chain fitted, or a failed hold-open washer on the closer.

How conditions in Smoke Rise affect screen door repair

Elevation means wind. Doors on exposed western walls take a beating that the same door in a sheltered valley subdivision would never see.

Cold makes screen spline brittle and it shrinks in the channel, which is why mesh often comes loose along one edge after a hard winter even though nothing touched it.

Wind gets behind a screen panel and pushes it out of the track, and on hinged screen and storm doors a gust catching the door is what tears closers out of the frame.

We factor that in on every screen door repair job around Smith Lake to the west and the rest of Smoke Rise.

Local factors we account for in Smoke Rise: winter freezes and storm wind — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

How we approach screen door repair

  1. Work out whether it is the screen or the trackA screen that jams is often a track problem. Replacing rollers in a damaged track fixes nothing.
  2. Check the frame for squareA racked frame will never slide properly. Corner keys get reset before anything else is considered. We check the drainage for ice blockage on mountain openings, which is a fault that only shows up on the coldest days.
  3. Choose mesh for the jobStandard, pet-resistant, solar or fine insect mesh. The right one depends on the door, the exposure and what tore the last one.
  4. Rescreen with correct tensionToo tight and the frame bows, too loose and it billows. Even tension is what keeps a screen flat and quiet.
  5. Fit and adjust the rollersSet so the panel rides smoothly and stays captured in the head channel.
  6. Test the full travelEnd to end, several times, with the latch engaging cleanly at the close.

What affects the cost of screen door repair in Smoke Rise

Pricing on screen door repair depends on what has actually failed, which is why we talk it through before quoting. These are the things that move the number:

  • the mesh type chosen, from standard fiberglass to pet-resistant and solar
  • storm door hardware such as closers and latches
  • rescreening versus repairing or replacing the frame
  • custom-built replacement panels where the original is not repairable
  • roller and track work in addition to the screen itself

Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Smoke Rise.

Screen door repair in Smoke Rise: questions we get asked

Do you repair storm doors as well as screens?

Yes, including closers, latches, sweeps, hinges and glass or screen inserts. Storm door closers that have torn out of the frame after a gust are one of the most common calls.

The screen slides hard even though it is not falling out. What is wrong?

Either the rollers have seized or the track is packed with debris. In Smoke Rise the track collects a surprising amount of grit, and it acts like grinding paste on the rollers.

My storm door blew open and broke. Can it be repaired?

Usually yes: the closer and its mounting take the damage. We repair the mounting and fit a wind chain so the next gust does not do the same thing.

Can a bent screen frame be straightened?

Sometimes. Light aluminum frames can often be brought back to square, but a badly racked frame is usually better replaced, and a custom panel is not expensive.

Will a solar screen make my room cooler?

It helps noticeably on a sunny exposure. Solar mesh blocks a good portion of the heat before it reaches the glass, which matters on west-facing doors during Smoke Rise summers.

How long does a rescreen take?

Usually under an hour per panel in Smoke Rise. If the frame needs straightening or corner keys replaced, allow a bit longer.
