Our Sylvania customers are spread from the AL-75 corridor to Main Street and out around Sand Mountain, and we serve the surrounding DeKalb County communities on the same schedule.
The mix of housing here matters for door work. Older Sylvania homes have wood frames and hardware worth repairing rather than replacing, while newer construction tends to have vinyl and aluminum systems where the moving parts wear out long before anything else does.

These are the exterior door repair faults we are called out to most often in Sylvania. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- Peeling finish on a wood front doorUV and weather exposure, often on a door with no overhang protection.
- Daylight visible around the closed doorFailed weatherstrip, a dropped door, or a frame out of square.
- The top edge of the door is unpaintedA common shortcut at installation, and it is the fastest route to a warped slab.
- The door is tight in the morning and loose by eveningA door absorbing moisture overnight and drying through the day, which points to an unsealed edge.
- Water on the floor inside after rainFailed sweep, threshold or sill pan, or missing drip cap above the door.
- The sweep leaves a visible arc of wear on the thresholdThe door has dropped, so the sweep is loaded rather than lightly contacting.

Up on the plateau the thermometer reads several degrees colder than the valley, and it stays below freezing longer. Ice storms are a real planning item here, not a novelty.
Ice at the threshold prevents a door from closing fully, and forcing it is what damages the sweep, the threshold and sometimes the door bottom itself.
Grit at the threshold grinds the door sweep as the door closes over it, and a worn sweep is the most common reason an otherwise sound exterior door starts letting in air, water and insects.
We factor that in on every exterior door repair job around Sand Mountain and the rest of Sylvania.
Local factors we account for in Sylvania: ice and sleet and grit and dust — typical of the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateau.

- Check it in the closed position firstStanding inside with the lights off and looking for daylight tells us more in ten seconds than any amount of measuring.
- Find where the water goesMost exterior door failures are water failures. We look at the threshold, the sill pan, the drip cap and the ground level outside.
- Correct the geometry before the sealsWeatherstrip cannot seal a door that is not sitting square. Hinges, reveal and threshold come first.
- Fit hardware and seals rated for exposureThe finish and material matter on an exterior door in this climate, and cheap components fail fast.
- Make the lock work without forceThe deadbolt should throw fully with the door simply closed. If you are leaning on it, the geometry is still wrong.
- Check it under a hoseWhere water has been getting in, we test the repair rather than assuming it worked. Plateau jobs get seals and lubricants rated for freezing temperatures, since standard products stiffen and stop working when it matters.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of exterior door repair in Sylvania
Every exterior door repair call in DeKalb County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- whether water management details also need correcting
- the material of the door: wood, fiberglass or steel
- whether the frame has rot that needs splicing
- sidelight and transom glass replacement
- security reinforcement and hardware upgrades
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Sylvania.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Exterior door repair in Sylvania: questions we get asked
Can you make my front door easier to open for an older parent?
Yes. Lever hardware instead of a knob, correct hinge adjustment so the door is not fighting the frame, and a threshold that is not a trip hazard all make a real difference.
Water comes in under my front door when it rains hard. Why?
The sweep and threshold are not sealing, and often the sill pan underneath has failed or was never there. In DeKalb County the rain comes in hard and sideways, so the seal has to work under pressure.
Can you fix a front door that has warped?
Depends on how far. Mild warping can often be handled with hinge and strike adjustment and better weatherstrip. Severe warping on a solid wood slab usually means replacing the slab, which can be hung in the existing frame.
Why does my front door stick in summer and not in winter?
Seasonal movement in the door and the frame. In Sylvania's humid months a wood door takes on moisture and grows slightly, and a door that already had tight clearance starts binding.
Is my front door secure enough?
The weak point on most entry doors is not the lock, it is the strike. A deadbolt in a strike plate held by short screws into thin jamb material offers much less than people assume. Reinforcing it is inexpensive.
My sidelight glass has fogged up. Can that be replaced separately?
Yes. Sidelights and transoms use insulated glass units that can be replaced on their own, without touching the door.
