Between Alabaster proper, the Siluria area and the newer building out toward the Thompson Road corridor, we stay busy in Shelby County, and Pelham is close enough that we are often nearby.
Door problems in Alabaster tend to sort into two groups: older homes where the frames and jambs have taken decades of weather, and newer builds where the hardware was the cheapest part of the package and has already given up.

These are the sliding door repair faults we are called out to most often in Alabaster. If you recognise one, the underlying cause is usually the second half of the line.
- The door takes both hands to moveAlmost always flat-spotted or seized rollers, sometimes a track that has worn into a trough.
- Cold air pouring in around the edgesCollapsed weatherstrip and worn pile seals, and often a gap the panel misalignment created.
- Water on the floor after heavy rainBlocked weep holes in the sill, so the track fills and backs up over the interior lip.
- The door stops short of the jamb by half an inchDebris packed at the end of the track, or an adjuster screw wound fully out.
- The track has a raised lip you can catch a fingernail onAluminium track peened over by a panel that has been running on bare wheel housings.
- The door will not latch anymoreThe panel has settled out of square, so the hook or mortise latch no longer lines up with the keeper.
One call gets you an answer. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix.
Click to Call (205) 619-2895Why sliding door repair fails in the Birmingham metro
The metro runs humid from April to October, then flips to freezing nights in January, and hardware that was fine in August starts binding in winter.
Dust and grit settle into the bottom track constantly and get packed under the rollers, and once that layer is compacted a vacuum will not lift it and the wheels are riding on abrasive rather than on aluminum.
When the soil under a slab swells and shrinks, the wide opening a patio slider sits in is one of the first places the movement shows, and a frame that has racked even a quarter inch will make a brand new set of rollers bind on one end of the travel.
It is why the same repair done properly in Alabaster lasts, and the same repair done cheaply does not.
Local factors we account for in Alabaster: grit and dust and soil movement — typical of the Birmingham metro.

- Start with the openingBefore the panel comes out we check the header for deflection and the sill for level, because a door cannot run true in an opening that is not.
- Lift the panel out and inspect itThe wheels come off the housings and get checked for flat spots, seized bearings and housings that have been running on bare metal.
- Match the hardwareSliding door rollers are not universal. We identify the manufacturer and panel weight and fit the right tandem assembly rather than the closest thing on the truck.
- Restore the running surfaceWorn track gets repaired or capped so the new rollers are not immediately damaged by the old groove. Around the metro we clear red clay dust out of tracks and mechanisms first, because it turns into grinding paste and will destroy new parts.
- Level the panel, then set the heightBoth adjusters are wound together so the panel sits level and the interlock engages along its whole length, not just at the top.
- Check the weep holes before we goA door that slides beautifully but drains badly will still put water on your floor, so the drainage gets cleared and tested.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895What affects the cost of sliding door repair in Alabaster
Every sliding door repair call in Shelby County is a little different, and the cost follows what the door actually needs:
- whether the frame has moved and needs shimming or refastening
- whether the fix is rollers only or rollers plus track repair
- the size and weight of the panel, since heavy insulated glass units need heavier assemblies
- how much damage the worn track has taken before the call
- the age of the door and whether replacement hardware is still made for it
Call and describe what the door is doing. In most cases we can tell you over the phone which of those applies to you before anyone drives out to Alabaster.

Click to Call (205) 619-2895Sliding door repair in Alabaster: questions we get asked
Will new rollers fix a door that scrapes loudly?
Only if the track is still in good condition. Once a roller has broken through and the housing has been riding on bare aluminum, the track has a groove worn in it, and new rollers dropped onto that groove will fail quickly. That is when we cap the track.
What does it mean when there is water pooling in the track?
The weep holes that drain the sill are blocked. It is one of the most common causes of water on the floor inside, and it is also one of the easiest things to fix, but if it sits long enough it rusts the roller assemblies out.
Do you replace the glass in sliding doors too?
Yes. Fogged units where the insulated seal has failed, cracked panes and full tempered glass replacement are all part of what we do, and we can usually keep the existing frame.
My door came off the track. Did I break something?
Usually not. A panel comes out of the track when it has dropped low enough that the head channel no longer holds it, which means the rollers were already worn or the adjustment screws backed out. Putting it back without correcting the height means it will happen again.
Can a sliding door that has stopped rolling be fixed, or does it need replacing?
Almost always fixed. The frame and glass are usually fine and it is the two small roller assemblies underneath that have failed. Replacing a whole patio door in Alabaster is a several thousand dollar job; rebuilding the rollers and track is a fraction of that and gets you a door that rolls better than it has in years.
Why does my sliding door work fine in winter and stick in summer?
That is a moisture and expansion problem, and it is common across Shelby County. Humid months swell wood and vinyl components and expand the frame slightly, which is enough to close up clearance that was already marginal because of worn rollers.
